Instead of evaluative praise, Montessori gives descriptive praise and encouragement.
Montessori praises behaviour, effort, perseverance, attitude, social skills, empathy, discipline, commitment, or that which would help children recognize their worth, and end up knowing how to give credit to themselves and appreciate who they are. Frivolous praise hinders the process of independence and growth that a Montessori system is all about. Praise from higher authority could eventually lead to a continuous need for validation, a disease that even adults are suffering from.
“The essence of independence is to be able to do something for one’s self. Adults work to finish a task, but the child works in order to grow, and is working to create the adult, the person that is to be.” Maria Montessori
Here, at the Montessori Ivy League Academy, our efforts are dedicated to grow a self-confident child. Someone who knows his/her worth and is secured to stand out. We celebrate the effort and not the result. We describe what we see and we describe what we feel. We make sure that the children are appreciated throughout the journey, rather than judged or pressured to meet a pre-set expectation.
You will hear phrases like “I like how you kept trying, until you figured it out”, or “I find the colors that you used breath-taking”, or “I appreciate you helping your friend”, or ““Thank you very much for helping me carry these boxes”. We liberate children from our judgments and we let them be.
Montessori Ivy League Academy and Montessori League Academy Franchise is a progressive private Montessori preschool, dedicated to recapture the 100 year-old tradition of Maria Montessori, and provide opportunities to own a Montessori preschool franchise, at the lowest cost and the lowest risk, while supporting and training for success of the business, as well as the children they serve.
